Kudos to you for having the courage to work with the sex workers in a red light area and that too in your first job. It is almost impossible to improve their lives since the government and the police work hand in hand to keep them where they are, still some NGOs are trying and the least we can do is to talk about it so more people are aware.only when sufficient people get involved can some serious steps be taken for their betterment.Your blog is the right step in that direction, please keep it up.
Thank you Sharmistha, so glad that you brought up the right issues and thank you for your kind words. Please do read the next ones and share to more and more people if you think you should :)
It is an elephant in the room that no one wants to address.. We as a society have a tendency to pretend that it's fringes do not exist. Good that someone not only is willing to talk but has also worked towards their uplift ent. We need more people like you.. Kudos.
I hope that the denial phase doesn’t last forever. Because until and unless we acknowledge these issue and grave reality, we will never be able to solve for it.
Don't know what to say.... How u got an idea to work in these field as young people with a high degree want to be paid more and more & want high designation... I Extremely feel proud that u r part of me,having such a sweet thoughts and a lovely big heart which can understand others... Talking about red light area and it's fact in this age also I used to think that it's a movie masala type thing(as It's difficult and don't want to face the dark side of our society) ... Can't even imagine what those girls must be going through... How can a father smash his own daughter.... Ridiculous
Speechless. Btw these red light areas are illegal or given license by govt? Also are there any organization including yours who is working with govt or trying to regularise the sex industry to solve sex worker's major problems?
The law is vague, while prostitution is legal in India, the act and the workers aren’t . A number of related activities including soliciting in a public place, kerb crawling, owning or managing a brothel, prostitution in a hotel, child prostitution, pimping and pandering are illegal.
As long as it is done individually and voluntarily, a woman (male prostitution is not recognised in any law in India) can use her body in exchange for material benefit. In particular, the law forbids a sex worker to carry on her profession within 200 yards of a public place. Which is hardly the case, so you can say that the law is vague for the profit of the government and the police!
Also, there’s nothing hidden from the police or the governments. These are lanes in the middle of the cities and the “cut” timely reaches the police and the government in act who also benefits as customers.
There are NGOs working for the sex workers (health mostly), their children (education, skilling, livelihoods) but the fight for legalisation or regularisation is far fetched simply because these women aren’t any vote bank.

That's just sad state of affairs. Looks like their only hope is people like you and your organization.
You have my heart! ❤️
